January In A Southern Garden

If you are just starting a new year with your Southern Garden, you may be asking

“What do I plant and when?”

I know that is what I was asking.  My mom wrote everything down in her garden binder.

Only problem, I no longer have access to that binder.  It was lost when she passed

away.  So,  armed with what I could remember, that handy dandy thing called the “the Web” and

my wonderful Husband, I have been piecing together what I need to plant and when.

First Week

  • Plant tulip and hyacinth bulbs.
  • Start Lettuce, Cauliflower, broccoli  in greenhouse.  I plant mine in my southern facing kitchen window.

Second Week

  • Root Fig Cuttings (I was given an heirloom cutting in 2013 by a dear friend and I am looking forward to watching its progress continue this year.

Third Week

  • Prepare rose beds
  • Begin planting Irish potatoes–I am holding off because of the freaky snow weather we have had this year.

Forth Week

  • Check Lawn equipment
  • Begin Planting Gladiolus bulbs
  • Plant Roses

Flowers To Transplant and Enjoy Now!

  • Bluebonnet
  • Foxglove
  • Hollyhock
  • Pansy
  • Garden Poppy
  • Snapdragon
  • Sweet Pea
  • Tulip–My Tulip Bulbs are starting to peak through!

Vegetables and Herbs–plant in ground

  • Beet
  • Cabbage
  • Carrot–carrots are great because you can grow them almost all year. I keep rotating patches so I always have so ready.
  • Mustard Greens–Great for diabetics so I grow lots of these for my husband.  Check my recipe Box for a tasty way to cook them up.
  • English Peas
  • Snow Peas
  • Irish Potatoes
  • Radishes
  • Shallots–I have rotating plots of these because I use several different types of onions in my recipes all year long.
  • Spinach-I plant many rows of this so it can be frozen for later.  Check my Recipe Box for a fabulous Spinach/Artichoke Recipe
  • Turnips

In seed Pots–My Kitchen window faces south and is the perfect place to start seeds.

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower–I had more success with Fall plantings than with Spring Plantings because when it decides to get warm here everything bolts.
  • Lettuce
  • Pepper–well on their way in my kitchen window
  • Parsley–Mine is still in my upper garden thriving beautifully (unless of course the snow kills it–I will post the results)
  • Tomato–well on their way in my kitchen window

Things that should be ready to Harvest: If you planted in late Fall

  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Mustard Greens
  • Parsley
  • Radish
  • Shallot
  • Spinach
  • Turnip
